Afrovibes Festival presents afro-psychedelic funk by the socially conscious South African band BCUC: energizing grooves with fanatical vocals, raps and chants.
From the buzzing townships of Soweto, South Africa, comes BCUC, an energetic eight-piece combining rebellious energy with an outspoken political message. For BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) music is not just entertainment, but also an instrument for political and spiritual change.
With punk and hip-hop inspired raw vocals, hypnotic traditional rhythms and groovy basslines, BCUC brings a unique contemporary South African sound: ‘Africangungungu’, as the group calls it. The enchanting vocals in Zulu, Sotho and English and the compositions, which easily reach the 20-minute mark, bring to mind the afrobeat of Fela Kuti. Earlier this year saw the release of their second album Emakhosini.
‘BCUC will come correct with their energetic, unique and magic formula; the voices of their ancestors, mixed with funk, punk-rock vibrations, hip-hop, Fela-inflections and much more in between’ (Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio).
